Getting in the Mood...

This is not what you think it is. Sorry to disappoint. Right now I am not in the mood for anything. I just want to watch tv and wait for Nationals to come. I can't write, books aren't holding my attention. My internal motor is revved up and I can't seem to relax into anything. All of this leads me to how specific a mood I have to be in for books. I have to be willing and ready for the world the books will foist upon me.

I started a book weeks ago. A historical - lots of promise, a historical jail break! But, man, could not get into it. Could. Not. Get. Into. It. I put it down, read all these YA books Maureen and Sinead give me - Divergent (amazing!) Incarceron (Good!) If I Stay (Amazing!) but they're all gone, now.

So, last night (after a truly disturbing Treme! Honestly, I can't watch that right before bed - it's too much!) I looked at the pile of books by my bed and picked up the historical jail break book - and I LOVED IT! I was swept right up! It was clever and subtle and I could have read for another hour if my husband wouldn't have beat me over the head with the book.

How about you guys? What books have you given a second chance and loved, despite a bad start? How many of you are killing time waiting for Nationals? How many of you were truly disturbed by Treme last night....

I'm panicking about how little time there is left between now and National. I thought I'd have MUCH more momentum going on my book by now.

Second chance books . . . the first time I picked up The Lace Reader, it didn't grab me. The second time? I was mesmerized and loved loved loved it. Have no idea why.

I want to do nothing right now. Sit outside, drink sangria and watch the world go by.

But I think we always feel like this during summer. It's not a time for being indoors holed up in front of our laptops.

I'm definitely just waiting for Nationals. Reading I've been struggling with because nothing out there is really grabbing me.

I'm reading Game of Thrones and it's okay - but I really like the show better.

Summer is one of my more productive times of the year. I'm not entirely sure why, maybe it's the lack of structure in other people's lives that means mine is less hemmed in. There are no carpools to drive, no school functions, etc.

Of course, they're around making dirty dishes all the time, but that's a whole 'nother story.

Oh, I still haven't watched Treme. Thanks for the warning.

My mood definitely affects how much I love a book... I think that's yet another reason why, as authors, we have to be able to shrug off rejections and bad amazon reviews, etc.

When we first met, you guys gave me a Laura Kinsale I could not get into at all. A few years later, I picked her up again and fell in total love and awe.

I'm reading The Help, awesome, Incarceron (okay -- cool, but not holding my attention as much as I think it should be). Looking forward to If I Stay and Delirium and Room... So many books. I need to take a speed reading course. Or take ritalin for my ADD.
