princess stories

Most little girls want to be one, me too if I can remember back that far and certainly today is a good day to daydream about gorgeous white dresses and tiaras and the pomp and attention that comes with marrying a prince.

Me, I'm too practical to get caught up in the romance of the situation, even today, but it has sparked my imagination. Princess stories can be fun to write, so here is where my imagaination has taken me.

A practical woman, raised to marry royalty, aware of the advantages it will give her, the way she can be an advocate for the undertrod and do real good in the world. Barely knows the prince, has never liked him, he seems too carefree, too much a playboy for my serious princess to be.
The prince doesn't want to marry, but he has no choice. He knows his duty, has never been allowed to forget his duty and so these two perfect strangers put on a wedding show for the world and once married begin the process of getting to know and love each other.

An updated marriage of convenience story.

I love when real world events spark fictional stories in my head and I'm sure right now, many, many writers have their own version of their princess story.

I'd love to hear what sort of princess story you would write? Would it be contemporary or historical? Paranormal even?

I'd totally go paranormal. I'm too lazy to actually research an historical or a contemporary princess story. I'd much rather make it up.

I actually sort of started a paranormal thing with a woman thrust into palace intrigue, but it never really went anywhere. Maybe someday, right?

I'm with Eileen. I'd go paranormal or UF.

So tired right now. Pulled an all nighter to do taxes and then watch a commoner become a Duchess.

I'm wide awake now as I just woke from my mid-morning nap. I took off work. Started at 4:00am and fell asleep as soon as they left the balcony.

I don't know that I could have enjoyed that anymore. Lovely dress, beautiful show. A whole country singing together an old English hymn.

Just wonderful.

I like your idea Sinead. Please write that book so I can read it okay? :)

You two seriously watched? You both crack me up. I'm wayyyyy too jaded for that. I was way too jaded when it was Diana and Charles' wedding. I'm miles more cynical now. Huh. Come to think of it, I think I'm jealous of the two of you.

Here's to romance. Here's to princesses and true love. Here's to friends reminding me why I write romance. :-)

A paranormal princess story, kind of like Maureen's twisted fairytales. Love it.

Stephanie. I couldn't write that story if my life depended on it. scenes that slowly reveal character, witty dialogue, not a monster in sight, it makes my head ache just thinking about it. I don't know why the only princess story that came to mind was a contemp.

Wish I could have woken up to see the wedding, but sleep is so important to me...

Welll you'll see the highlights. I just remember being there to watch Diana and I couldn't not be there to see her son.

I also have my "bombshell" agenda. When the pressure of the world is put on a woman's shoulders (and let's face it - all the pressure was on Kate) I like to see how a person handles something like that.

She poised, beautiful, elegant. And I got the impression when she stepped onto the balcony she was actually enjoying herself.

Good for you Kate! Sorry I mean Duchess.

I was just daydreaming about my princess story...handsome prince, knows his duty about to marry some second cousin of the royal family of switzerland or something - takes off around the world on a boat trip with his brother - meets a lovely american tending bar on some island somewhere - she has no idea who he is. Romance ensues, he leaves, but gives her a number to call him if she ever needs anything. She gets pregnant, calls him - oh my god, he's the prince! She tries NOT to marry him. Wants very much NOT to marry him - the entire planet insists. He's quite charming, loveable actually, but his commoner mother was destroyed by the press when she was alive and it's very obvious that the heroine is NOT what he wants....

the dress was gorgeous wasn't it - she's a beautiful girl - Stephanie - that you are so crazy for this makes me howl. Glad you enjoyed your day...

I had to watch it and wasn't disappointed.

Her dress was gorgeous (and I have to say, a lot like Sinead's wedding dress, I thought...)

And I love how they put trees into Westminster Abbey. With the natural light streaming through the stained glass (just in time) it looked like they were in a park or a roofless ruin, not a dark church.

And the singing really got to me.

I'm tired right now (and trying to stay awake while critiquing) but it was worth it. :)

I'm with Eileen - I'm too jaded. And, like her, I didn't even watch Charles and Diana.

The weird thing is - the book I turn in Monday is a Princess story. A paranormal (Nocturne). She's a shapeshifter princess. He's an American neurosurgeon who has gone blind in an accident.

I've got ten pages left to write before Monday. Better get back to it.
