Inspiration Needed
So, I'm starting a new book and I've got a great idea I'm excited about and it got some great tweaking from Sinead and Maureen, but now, I find that with the changes, I can't picture my hero. I can't see where he lives, or what he's wearing when we first meet him.
I'm not the kind of author who finds pictures of hot guys and then uses them as inspiration for my hero. Usually I do that after writing the book. I don't have a pintrest board, or a collage of themes. But what I do need is a vibe. And I totally steal my vibe from the greater world. For instance my heroine the vibe is a mishmash of Elizabeth Taylor, punk rock music, the book Eat Pray Love (don't hate me, Eileen, I'm sorry!!!) New York City, feminism and little girl lost. See, doesn't make much sense, but all that stuff - it gives me a picture of her.
And right now, my hero has no vibe. He's rich. A Southern Gentlemen. Needs to get married. Sometimes he wears a suit...sometimes he doesn't. Has a kid. Maybe. See...nothing. I need a movie, an actor, I need some music, perhaps a drink. I need to see his office, think of a sexual hook or deviance. He's a suit with nothing in it right now...
So, my question to you - southern movies? Actors? Books? Where the rich white guy isn't a bad guy, but a good guy. And hot. Any idea?

Rhett Butler baby. Mix in some Matthew Mcconaughey, whiskey and a slow moving walk... because it's so damn hot down there.
Go out and watch the Long Hot Summer with Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman... now that will give you some definite inspiration!
Oh, what about the hero from Sweet Home Alabama. Not him, but a bit of him might help you. Watch that movie again.
Oh, yes, on Paul Newman. Or maybe Patrick Dempsey? I don't know why. He's not southern, is he? There's something about that hair and that smile that look rich and successful, but still kind of awesome. And didn't he just rescue a kid from a burning car or something?
I was going to say Rhett Butler but then I remembered . . . Rhett only played at being a Southern Gentleman when it suited his purposes. There was always a dangerous edge about him, and he could undress you with his eyes . . .
Hmmm. Okay. I vote for Rhett totally. lol
But I was also thinking of Patrick Dempsey in SWEET HOME ALABAMA--I know he plays a NY guy in the film but I remember thinking that he would be the type that would look good in a suit . . . and out of one, too.
Harry Connick Jr in HOPE FLOATS also comes to mind--I think his role in that movie was more blue collar?--but in real life, whenever he's on the Ellen show, he always has this real sarcastic edge about him but a strong thread of decency that is very appealing. Plus, he has his daughter singing on his music for a couple of songs. That's incredibly sweet--and she has a good voice.
And I think George Clooney originally hails from Tennessee, too. And George certainly knows how to wear a tux. (And that rom com he did with Michelle Pfeiffer--ONE FINE DAY--was super cute with him and the kids.)
