books, books and more books, please

It’s Friday, I’m behind in my Xmas shopping, writing and housework. I’m largely OK with this, but I’m also behind in my blog writing. So I apologize in advance if this makes if this rambles aimlessly.

One of the things top of mind lately is I want to read a really good romance. I’d settle for just one over the Xmas season.

So I’m looking for recommendations. Any and all, bring ‘em on.

One of the saddest aspects of getting better as a writer, is becoming a far harder to please reader. I no longer have any patience for those scenes where the heroine reviews how her last meeting with the hero went, or the hero contemplates his hard, neglected childhood. I recognize the problems with static scenes like these now, but before, I probably just skipped them, without even blinking and they certainly didn’t interfere with how I felt about the book.

Now they do.

But I think I’m still willing to forgive problems in a book, if overall the book entertains and intrigues me. I’m easier to please in this respect than Molly. (Anne Stuart’s latest is proof positive of this. That hero alone was enough to get me to love the book)

But mostly I’m going back and re-reading old favourites. Anything written by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Laura Kinsale, Iris Johansen’s historicals are high up on my list. I know I’m missing out on some amazing books, because that haven’t hit my radar.. (a subtle plea for recommendations…)

Let’s share.

And did anyone see the Golden Globe noms. Michael C. Hall was deservedly there for Dexter. Nice to see a non-network show get noticed in some way. As was Big Love, which is also a great show and Bill Paxton, but where was Jeannie Tripplehorn, who is the glue holding that show together?

You're watching Big Love??? We watched for a while and then got creeped out. I haven't seen the rest of the nominations. But I tstill think Micheal C HAll deserves if for 6 feet under for the episode when he got car jacked. That guy is goood good good.

Really enjoying Betina Krahn's latest - book of seven veils something like that. Good stuff.

I don't have any recommendations for you, sadly... I've hear the Betina Krahn book is good (but although it's MY BOOK MOLLY I haven't had it in my house long enough to read it...) Ed comment. Maureen willingly loaned the book to Molly, her TBR pile too high to contemplate.

I really liked Big Love. In so many ways that family really is a family and it does make me think about how we jump to conclusions about things... But Jeanne Tripplehorn's character not only is the glue that holds the show together, she's the glue that holds that strange family together, so I agree she should have been nominated. (Notice how the male actors for TV are mostly from cable shows while the women are all from network shows? Strange...)

My fave book in a long time is Sally MacKenzie's The Naked Marquis (a regency).

Not only is it funny but the hero is about as real as it gets. He doesn't think about love or any of that soft stuff (or give that big long love speech that no man in his right mind would ever spew off on). He's obsessed with the heroine's breasts and getting her in the sack.

In my experience (three brothers, a hubby with two brothers and spending four years in a mixed dorm), that is more how men think.

Dexter does rock...

and you just reminded me why Big Love grew on me, too, Sinead... I loved how the backstory about how they became a polygamist family slowly trickled out and how it explained the relationships between the women... Especially between the Cloe Sevigny character and the Jeanne Tripplehorn one... Makes you see a better side to the Cloe one and understand why Jeanne loves her like a sister (wife??) in spite of how much trouble she causes...

I enjoy Johanna Lindsay. Do I hear crickets chirping in the background? ;)
Her book "Secret Fire" was quite good, I'm re-reading it for the umpteenth time.

For a funny quirky romance I really enjoyed Katie MacAlister's "Men in Kilts".

Hope these suggestions help. I haven't really been able to read a whole lot since I got serious about writing, that and NaNo wiped me out.

I stumbled over an Ellora's Cave release called "The Claiming of Moira Shine" by M.A. Everaux and it knocked my socks off. Very different from what I'm used to reading - but that's a good thing, right? Check it out.

I haven't seen the GG noms yet, but am snubbing my nose at cable series' til The Sopranos returns. Call me stubborn.

Oh, Wylie. You must watch Dexter. Don't deprive yourself just because the Sopranos take so long between seasons.

Usually a Johanna Lindsey fan but her latest (A Pirate's Love) was not up to her usual quality.

Unfortunately, I thought it so bad, it was unreadable (and I bought it too, thinking a Johanna Lindsey book was a no brainer). Maybe its the decrease in editing that publishers are now doing, I don't know.

Anyway you might want to read a bit in the bookstore before purchasing it. I'll definitely be doing that with her next one.

Maureen - I can't watch Dexter - right now, anyway. It's up against something else I watch (can't think of what at the moment!) but I fully intend to immerse myself in it when it comes out on DVD. I prefer, actually, owning and watching these cutting edge series at my leisure (which sadly means a marathon viewing in a couple of sleepless days!!) I like MC Hall - have since his 6'Under days...

Also enjoy Nip/Tuck - talk about envelope pushing - and can't wait for CBC to pick up the current season.

Wylie... Not quite as good as DVD, but TMN on demand lets you watch the episodes whenever you want. I don't even know when Dexter airs... I watch it on "on demand".

I have the 1st 2 seasons of Nip/Tuck on DVD and need to tuck into it. (No pun intended.)

TMN on demand has Dexter? I had no idea!
Going to watch...
